What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials’ accreditations are government-backed frameworks designed to improve cyber security to protect your business against cyber crime.

Cyber crime is getting more and more sophisticated and comes in many different forms and methods. Having said that, the vast majority of cyber attacks are quite primative in nature, often carried out by relatively unskilled individuals. They’re the digital equivalent of a thief trying your front door to see if it’s unlocked.

It’s crucially important you bolster your cyber security. Cyber Essentials is the perfect solution as they have been designed to prevent the success of cyber crime.

There are two levels of certification: Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus

Both certifications demonstrate your commitment to keeping yours and your customers businesses safe from cyber crime. Cyber Essentials Plus is more advanced and is fast becoming a necessity in more and more professional sectors.

Cyber Essentials

This self-assessment option helps you ramp up your cyber defences to help protect you against a wide variety of the most common types of cyber attack. If your business has poor cyber security and is therefore vulnerable, it will be an easier and more obvious target for cyber crime. Cyber Essentials should be a fundamental part of your cyber security strategy.

Cyber Essentials …what’s involved

To achieve Cyber Essentials certification, you must complete a questionnaire consisting of around 80 questions, which cover the IT devices and services you use and how they have been configured.

Once completed you will be rewarded with the internationally recognised accreditation, which demonstrates you have all the necessary cyber security measures in place to protect your business against cyber crime.

Cyber Essentials Plus

Take it a step further and go for Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation, which gives you technical verification by an official external certification body (us!) who will carry out several rigorous tests to check your IT security is robust. Great not only for peace of mind but is an attractive asset to investors or when tendering for Government contracts.

Cyber Essentials Plus …what’s involved

As part of our technical verification, we will audit your Cyber Essentials questionnaire and verify your answers. We will also test your IT systems, IT network and website for vulnerabilities.

The Process

Once you have submitted your completed Cyber Essentials questionnaire, you will get your results from the IASME portal. If you receive remediation advice or are asked for more information, you can review your answers, update and re-submit.

To progress from Cyber Essentials to Cyber Essentials Plus, you must successfully achieve and complete Cyber Essentials Plus within 3 months of completing the Cyber Essentials assessment.
